Now, though, the humble log cabin has made the news for Royal reasons. It has been revealed that Prince William proposed to fiancé Kate Middleton in a wooden cabin whilst the couple were on a break in Kenya in October.
The Prince proposed to the future Queen whilst on a break at the Rutundo Log Cabins on Mount Kenya. The couple then made their engagement public some weeks later. Describing her stay in the log cabin as 'so romantic', Kate Middleton enjoyed a 'wonderful 24 hours' in the rudimentary log cabin, in an area of Kenya well known for its trout fishing.
The happy couple celebrated their engagement with a bottle of champagne by candlelight in front of an open fire. Kate left a note in the visitor's book at the cabin saying "Sadly no fish to be found but we had great fun trying. I love the warm fires and candle lights - so romantic! Hope to be back again soon." Far from being a shed by another name, log cabins are a romantic and beautiful addition to any garden. As well as being perfect for a workshop or home office, they are also an excellent place to enjoy a glass of bubbly by candlelight in your garden on a glorious British evening.
Prince William has been a regular visitor to the cabin in Rutundu over recent years and decided it would be the perfect romantic retreat to propose. Also signing the visitor's book, the future King joked about the cold nights at the retreat, which is to be found 10,500ft up Africa's second highest peak. William wrote: "Such fun to be back! Brought more clothes this time! Looked after so well. Thank you guys! Look forward to next time, soon I hope."
Unlike the many garden log cabins enjoyed all year round by Brits, the Rutundu lodge had no electricity. An open fire provides the heating whilst candles provided the light. The floor is made from polished wooden planks covered in old rugs and the log cabin also boasts a four poster bed made from local trees.
As the wooden cabin can become cold at night, guests are advised to bring pyjamas and to keep the open fire alight. With such basic facilities, the toilet stands over a cesspit and the living room contains little more than an ancient sofa and a couple of armchairs covered in blankets.
Many Brits choose a garden log cabin with a veranda as it is the perfect place to sit and relax on a warm evening with a glass of wine. And, it is believed that this is where the Prince proposed to his long-term girlfriend.
A Royal spokesperson told The Sun: "There are only two cabins which can lodge a maximum of eight and you can't go up there unless you are expected. If anyone tried to stroll in you are talking about a 15 kilometre walk from the nearest public road - through areas where elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and hyena live in the wild".
"Rutundu also has its own watch dogs which come with very sharp teeth and claws. And there are heavily-armed poaching patrols working 24 hours a day to contend with. Short of being inside the SAS's base at Hereford, this is the safest place in the world for William. It is the one place he can be himself. And he does not have to be guarded because the wildlife there are his guardians.
"It is his own private bolthole and will remain so as it is totally inaccessible when he wants it to be. What better place could he find to propose?" With a wide range of log cabins available, it is easy to find the perfect, romantic addition to your garden. Unlike the Royal couple, you can easily wire up electricity to your garden retreat and spend long evenings working, enjoying films and television or eating and drinking. There's little better than sipping a cold glass of white wine by candlelight in a beautiful log cabin.
Garden log cabins are affordable, easy to assemble and now come with a Royal seal of approval. And, if they are good enough to be used for a Royal proposal, they are good enough for everyone.
